Years 5 & 6 form the middle years in the Prep School at Eagle House. From Year 5 onwards, all subjects are taught by specialist teachers: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, RS, LFL+, French, Art, Design (including Food Technology, Textiles & Coding), Music & Philosophy, and Latin is introduced to the curriculum.
The children also spend one and a half hours a week involved in the Golden Eagle Programme to explore even more diverse areas of the curriculum such as life saving, photography and bushcraft. From Year 5, ICT is such a fundamental part of all learning it is no longer seen as a discrete subject. By this age, our students have acquired a good set of IT skills that they can apply in all subject areas, enabling ICT to become fully integrated within the curriculum as a whole.
Increased independence in learning is the focus in these formative middle years and the children are encouraged to be more responsible for their own learning and attainment. Children are set subject specific targets and have frequent discussions with their teachers to help plan their next steps so that they can reach their goals.
Efforts grades awarded every 3 weeks enable children to judge how well they are performing and what they need to do to improve their performance in the classroom. Independent learning skills are also explicitly taught through our Ex-Pro enrichment sessions every other week. Children are taught about the importance of time management and learn a range of research and presentation skills through the completion of a range of stimulating and relevant tasks and mini projects.
