There is a world of treasures that lie within English and it is our quest to unearth them, sharing the joys of reading and writing with all our pupils.
At Eagle House our aim is to give children exposure to all forms of English so that they have the tools to write in whatever style and to appreciate, understand and enjoy their reading. Our aim is to inspire them to excellence, to make them become independent thinkers and to express themselves thoughtfully and eloquently both orally and on paper. Through the study of appealing and relevant texts, research, language development, creative challenges, discussion and assessment we aim to make all children confident and successful readers and writers.
The importance of spelling, grammar and punctuation within their writing is emphasised throughout their Eagle House career. Listening to and reflecting on the views of others and using speech thoughtfully and powerfully is also a major aim of the department.
Children are encouraged to read a wide range of fiction and reading lists and a well stocked library help them to broaden and develop their own reading.
Several anthologies are published throughout the year to showcase the writing within the school.
The literature of the English language is celebrated throughout the department and children are exposed to a wide variety of texts from contemporary and classic writers. The huge range of children’s and teenage fiction allows us to broaden vocabulary, delve into worlds and learn about experiences far removed from our experience.
The excitement and diversity of the subject are celebrated at every turn. Technology is an integral part of the curriculum and enables children to research, create and present their work in a wide range of formats. It is a mixture of the traditional and the contemporary that allows us to say our children are Learning for Life.
